Water flossers are a type of electric “flosser” that shoots a stream of water to clean between your teeth. And they are very popular for orthodontia patients, because they are easier than regular floss.
While that may be the case, it should not be a full substitution for regular flossing. The water cannot get between teeth as well as actual floss, which prevents the proper removal of food and plaque. If this bacteria is not removed, it can cause gym disease and decay.
Water flossers, also known as Waterpiks are not as effective at removing food and particles from between teeth and around the gum line.
Not that you can’t use a Waterpik. They are a great way to remove large pieces of food from between the teeth. But in order to maintain good dental health, you need to brush and floss regularly – regardless of using a water flosser.
If you do want to use a Waterpik, just point the stream of water between your teeth. It might feel good on your teeth and gyms, so feel free to try it if that’s the case.
If you have any questions about water flossers, give our office a call! We’d be happy to advise you on that or set up a consultation appointment for orthodontia.
