Most people who undergo orthodontic treatment will experience discomfort for the first few days after having them applied to their teeth. This can make eating a bit more complicated, and uncomfortable. It is important to stick with soft foods for the first week, at least, even when the discomfort begins to subside to allow for the bonding agent to fully adhere the brackets to the teeth.
It is also important to not touch the brackets and wires with your tongue or fingers, which could cause bending or damage to the wires and could make the brackets come off your teeth. You may want to alleviate and soothe the discomfort by rubbing them but this will only prolong your treatment. They are doing their job my moving your teeth to their proper placement and this will lead to discomfort. If needed, we recommend using over the counter medications such as Advil or Aleve, to help with the discomfort.
Sleeping on your back will also protect your lips, gums, and cheeks from the brackets, wires, and hooks pressing and rubbing on them, causing sores. If you do experience sores, you can apply orthodontic wax to the brackets in the affected area to relieve the tenderness and avoid eating or drinking anything with citrus or spicy foods.
We DO NOT recommend eating the following foods throughout your entire treatment time:
Some patients find that warm foods can be soothing to the discomfort for the first week, others say that cold items offer more relief. As long as you avoid these items, you can try both warm or cold soft food choices to help minimize your discomfort.
- Ice (any form)
- Hard, sticky or chewy candy
- Hard pizza crust
- Chips, hard crackers or pretzels
- Bagels and other hard breads and rolls
- Nuts and Popcorn
- Crunchy raw fruits and vegetables
The following foods we DO recommend you enjoy for your first week and after any adjustments that cause tenderness of discomfort:
- Shakes and smoothies
- Scrambled eggs
- Moist cakes
- Chili, soups, and stews
