Prioritize Your Family’s Oral Health This Year

It’s a new year! Many have made their new year’s resolutions but very few probably included making a trip to the dentist or orthodontist. If this important task didn’t make your list of to do’s for the year, you may want to add an extra line for you and your family. It’s important to keep your oral health a top priority for you and your kids!

If your child is 7 years old (or older) and has not been seen by an orthodontist yet, don’t wait for a referral from your dentist. Referrals are not needed to see an orthodontist. Most orthodontists offer free or low-cost initial exams for new patients. Your child’s bite should be evaluated by an orthodontist and at 7 years old, most children have enough permanent teeth to have a proper evaluation of current or potential issues. This can easily be done by an examination, panoramic x-rays as well as photos. This will help your orthodontist see if there are any missing or improperly positioned teeth soon to erupt. If you or your child have any specific issues or areas of concern, you can address those with the orthodontist during your child’s appointment.

During this initial consultation, you will be advised if your child will require any treatment. Sometimes treatment can be needed right away, other times it can be more of a waiting game, to see how the growth of their jaw and face progress. You may also find out that no treatment will be required at all!

If you have already personally had orthodontic treatment and have been told you require a retainer, be a good role model for your kids and wear it. Oral health care is a lifelong task, and wearing your retainer as instructed is part of it. Since your teeth can naturally move over your lifetime, it is important to wear your retainer to keep them in their place after your treatment. If you find that your retainer no longer fits or your teeth have begun to shift, contact us to schedule an appointment.
