You might think that once you g et your braces off, you’re done with orthodontics forever. But wearing a retainer for a period of time following removal of your braces is essential to keeping your new smile beautiful and healthy.
The staff here at SmileOn will prepare an individualized treatment plan for you and your individual needs. Part of that plan includes working together to determine what retainer is best for you and how long you should wear it.
There are three basic types of retainers available to you.
Hawley Retainers: this is what you think of when you think about classic retainers. They are made of molded plastic and wires, and are easy to remove and clean.
Essix Retainers: Essix retainers are a popular choice for teens and adults who want their retainer to be more invisible. Essix retainers are made of only clear molded plastic, similar to Invisalign trays.
Permanent Bonded Retainers: As the name suggests, permanent bonded retainers are permanent (for a time). They are installed by your orthodontist on the back of the teeth, so they are invisible to other people. Most patients complain about tongue irritation after it is installed, however, if your teeth are likely to shift following braces and dental treatment, they may be a great solution.
