Congrats, you got your braces off! This is an exciting day certainly, but your journey with orthodontia is not over yet! The last thing you want is to have to get braces or Invisalign a few years from now because your teeth move. And the only want to do that is by being diligent about wearing your retainer.
It takes time for the bone and all the tissues around your teeth to reorganize and heal after your braces are removed. Therefore you need to wear your retainer 24/7 (apart from taking it out to eat and brush your teeth) for 3-6 months after your braces are removed. Then, you need to wear your retainer every night.
If it starts to feel tight when you put the retainer in, you should wear it for longer periods of time, until your teeth readjust.
You will probably need to wear your retainer every night or every other night for the rest of your life. As we age, our teeth naturally shift. Keep them in place and wear your retainer regularly.
If you skip too many days, you may find your retainer no longer fits. Please call our office if this happens. We can find a solution to get your teeth back to where they should be, or get you a new retainer so they don’t move any more.
